The Old Fort Depot was built in 1881 and is the second depot built in Old Fort. The museum interprets the railroad history of the area, including a variety of exhibits and artifacts used by Southern Railroad. A scale model of the seven hand-dug tunnels and nine miles of track ascending the Swannanoa Gap from Old Fort to Ridgecrest is on display. This section of track was completed in 1879 and at one time included the longest tunnel in the country at 1800 feet. The tunnels were built by Western North Carolina Railroad.
